We live in a community surrounded by 1.8-million acres of national forest. A landscape that encompasses some of the most remote and pristine land in Colorado. On Saturday, September 24th the Pagosa Area Trails Council is partnering with the Pagosa Ranger District for a Public Lands Day Celebration.

The celebration begins at 8:00 am at Coyote Hill. Located on Piedra Road, just as the road turns to dirt, there is plenty of parking. Numerous games and activities will be ongoing through 12:00 pm. This is an excellent offering for families to play together – as many of the activities are geared towards family. In fact, kids should pick up their Passport Book upon arrival. The passport book lists the numerous activities taking place. A goodie bag will be given to kids that participate and show their passport book before leaving.

For adults, we have several booths that boast user groups and organizations in Pagosa Springs who play, work and volunteer on the 102-trails, or 687-miles of trails, within our outdoor playground. Expect to meet and talk with organizations like the San Juan Back Country Horsemen or the San Juan Outdoor Club.

In addition to the kids games and activities, there will be an ongoing ROGAINE Challenge Course and Pet a Horse station. At 9:00 am we have a Nature Walk being offered by SJOC. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water. There will be two presentations. The first begins at 9:30 am, CUSSing Our Tools – The Right Way and at 10:30 am, Sustainable Trail Design and Building.

In the afternoon, DUST2 will be showcasing Pagosa’s new urban trail. Meet at 1:00 pm at the High School parking lot West. Salida’s Tony Boone will be sharing the flagging and mapping of the single track route. Tony has led crews in sculpting over 500-miles of shared-use and purpose-built trails. His national and international experience has made him a pioneer in the evolution and art of creating sustainable, machine-built trails for mountain bikers, hikers, runners and equestrians. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water.

We look forward to seeing you at Public Lands Day.
