Elevation Stats: Elevation Loss 463(11,773ft to 11,310ft with ascent 333ft descent 750ft)
Trailhead Facilities: None – big parking lot.
Short Trail Summary: This a great hike with big views. The hike starts at the Lobo Overlook sign heading west. The trail merges with the CDT #813 at the 1/2 mile mark. The trail will go up and down as you hike on the CDT with great views. You will reach the Weminuche Boundary sign at 1.5 miles. Rock Lake is 4.3 miles from Lobo Overlook sign.
Directions to Trailhead: Drive east on 160 for 23.2 miles then take a left on Colorado road #402(Lobo Overlook Road). Drive to top for 2.6 miles to radio tower and park near Lobo Overlook sign. Directions Map (click here)
As of July 16 (Sunday), Lobo overlook road was still closed so I started the hike at Wolf Creek pass. The trail had treefall on it but it was all fairly easy to pass around. There was only one significant snow field (40 feet or so) with a drop off – this was closer to Rock Lake. However, when crossed with care, it was fine. I used microspikes in the morning on the way back since it was icy. Rock Lake itself had plenty of mosquitos at the typical times (shortly after sunrise and around sunset) but there were good campsites a bit away from the lake! The lake is stunning! Love the view over the valley below.
6.15.21 Hiked 4.3 miles from Wolf Creek Pass and had to turn around about 3/4 of a mile from Rock Lake – too much snow on the north facing slopes before Rock Lake. Trail was muddy and 32 fallen trees across the trail.
